Six Sigma - The People

Sponsor -  Senior executive who sponsors the overall Six Sigma Initiative

Leader -  Senior level executive responsible for implementing Six Sigma within the business

Champion -  Middle or senior level executive who sponsors a specific Six Sigma project, ensuring that resources are available & cross-functional issues are resolved

Master Black Belt -  Highly experienced and successful Black Belt who has managed several projects and is an expert in Six Sigma methods/tools. Responsible for coaching/mentoring/training Black Belts, for helping Six Sigma leader, Champions keep the initiative on track. MBB are Six Sigma Quality experts and responsible for strategic implementations within an organization. It include training, mentoring of Black Belts & Green Belts; helping to prioritize, select, charter high-impact projects; maintaining the integrity of the Six Sigma measurements, improvements, tollgates; developing, maintaining and revising Six Sigma training materials.

MBB should be qualified to teach other Six Sigma facilitators the methodologies, tools, and applications in all functions and should be a resource for utilizing statistical process control (typically just outside the Black Belt's knowledge base) within processes.

Black Belt -  Full-time professional who acts as a team leader on Six Sigma projects. Typically has four to five weeks of classroom training in methods, statistical tools, and (sometimes) team skills. Six Sigma team leaders responsible for implementing process improvement projects (DMAIC or DFSS) within the business -- to increase customer satisfaction levels and business productivity. Black Belts are knowledgeable and skilled in the use of the Six Sigma methodology and tools.

BB has typically completed four weeks of Six Sigma training, and has demonstrated mastery of the subject matter through the completion of project(s) and an exam. BB coach Green Belts and receive coaching and support from Master Black Belts.

Green Belt -  Part time professional who participates on a Black Belt project team or leads smaller projects. Typically has two weeks of classroom training in methods and basic statistical tools. An employee of an organization who has been trained on the improvement methodology of Six Sigma and will lead a process improvement or quality improvement team as *part* of their full time job. Their degree of knowledge and skills associated with Six Sigma is less than that of a Black Belt or Master Black Belt. Extensive product knowledge in their company is a must in their task of process improvement.

GB employee plays an important role in executing the Six Sigma process at an organization level.

Team Member -  Professional who has general awareness of Six Sigma (through no formal training) and who brings relevant experience or expertise to a particular project.

Process Owner  - Professional responsible for the business process that is the target of a Six Sigma project
